Klima-Alarm am Mittelmeer: Kein Meer der Welt erhitzt sich laut einem Bericht der Umweltschutzorganisation WWF so stark wie das Wasser zwischen S\u00fcdeuropa, Nordafrika und Vorderasien. Demzufolge steigen die Temperaturen im bei Deutschen so beliebten Mittelmeer um 20 Prozent schneller als im Durchschnitt aller Weltmeere.<\/p>\n

Die Klimakrise habe bereits einige der wichtigsten marinen \u00d6kosysteme \u00abteils irreversibel ver\u00e4ndert, mit sp\u00fcrbaren Folgen auch f\u00fcr Fischerei und Tourismus\u00bb, hie\u00df es in einer WWF-Mitteilung. Das Korallensterben und die Quallenplagen n\u00e4hmen zu.<\/p>\n

Tropische Quallenarten breiten sich aus<\/strong><\/p>\n

Der WWF spricht bei Weichkorallen wie den f\u00e4cherartigen Gorgonien, aber auch bei der gr\u00f6\u00dften mediterranen Muschelart, der Gro\u00dfen Steckmuschel, von einem \u00abMassenaussterben\u00bb. Im Zuge der Hitzewellen verbreiten sich tropische Quallenarten dem Bericht zufolge seit 2003 immer mehr, auch im Winter. Die massive \u00dcberfischung von fast 90 Prozent der Fischbest\u00e4nde sorge zus\u00e4tzlich daf\u00fcr, dass die Fressfeinde und Nahrungskonkurrenten der Quallen fehlen.<\/p>\n

Die nur im Mittelmeer vorkommenden Neptungraswiesen seien durch die Erw\u00e4rmung des Wassers und den Anstieg des Meeresspiegels bedroht, mit ernsten Folgen f\u00fcr die Artenvielfalt. Jede f\u00fcnfte Mittelmeerart ben\u00f6tige Neptungras als Lebensraum. Diese Unterwasserwiesen speicherten bis zu 42 Prozent der CO2-Emissionen aller L\u00e4nder des Mittelmeeres und seien deshalb auch als Kohlenstoffsenke wichtig.<\/p>\n

Belastung durch Plastikm\u00fcll und Schifffahrt<\/strong><\/p>\n

K\u00fcsten und St\u00e4dte seien bedroht, \u00abweil mit schwindenden Seegraswiesen auch der nat\u00fcrliche K\u00fcstenschutz abnimmt\u00bb, erkl\u00e4rte die Leiterin Meeresschutz beim WWF Deutschland, Heike Vesper. Besonders problematisch sei, dass die Effekte der Klimakrise \u00abauf ein ohnehin gestresstes Meer\u00bb treffen, das durch \u00dcberfischung, Verschmutzung, Plastikm\u00fcll und Schifffahrt stark belastet sei. \u00abIrgendwann wird der Stresscocktail zu viel\u00bb, so Vesper.<\/p>\n

Der WWF fordert, 30 Prozent des Mittelmeers bis 2030 effektiv zu sch\u00fctzen. Um den Trend umzukehren, m\u00fcsse man den CO2-Aussto\u00df senken, den menschlichen Nutzungsdruck aufs Meer reduzieren und seine Widerstandskraft durch Schutzgebiete aufbauen.<\/p>\n
